Chinchillas are furry creatures native to the Andes Mountain ranges of Northern Chile. These little rodents were first seen on earth around 4 million years ago. We closely relate them to porcupines and guinea pigs
. The chinchillas, just like other rodents, produce a lot of waste. There are difficult to keep clean. However, potty training a chinchilla can reduce the cleanliness stress. But the real question is How to potty train a chinchilla?
There are several ways to potty train a chinchilla. However, some of the best methods include training when your pet is young, using the waste transfer method, or using the gradual association method for the chinchillas.
Steps to potty train chinchillas:
Litter training a chinchilla needs patience. These pets are not habitual of living with humans. This litter training might take some time.
But it is not impossible to train a chinchilla to use a litter box. You can efficiently train a chinchilla to use litter for urinating, but you cannot teach them to use litter material for defecation.
Step 1: Place litter box in the cage
The best way to potty train a chinchilla is by placing the litter box in the cage. It will gradually make the chinchilla habitual to using it. Place a litter box with critter litter in the enclosure of your pet.
Step 2: Use soaked bedding
Use the soaked bedding to make chinchilla familiar with the litter. You can place the wet cage bedding in the litter box. Eventually, the chinchilla will become habitual of using the litter box by identifying the smell. In the start, you can avoid cleaning the litter box regularly to make your chinchilla familiar with the litter box.
Step 3: Stay regular
Continue using these methods for weeks and months. Don’t lose patience or skip the process. The only way to potty train a chinchilla is by being consistent. They might take a longer time than other pets to understand the use of a litter box.
Ways to Potty train Chinchillas:
Chinchillas are one of the most intelligent animal species. They understand the commands and follow the instructions efficiently. Many owners have trained their chinchillas successfully. There are several ways to potty train chinchillas. Some of these ways are as follows:
Start at a young age:
The best way of training a chinchilla is to start at a very young age. Potty training chinchillas is a long process. Many chinchillas only learn to urinate inside the litter box.
They do not defecate inside the litter pan, and you still must clean the mess in the cage. You can start potty training a chinchilla around nine months of age.
Starting at a young age can help you train your chinchilla in a better way. Monitor your chinchilla and when they defecate, place the chinchilla in the litter box to make him habitual.
Potty training is not a sudden accomplishment. It needs time to make an animal used to it. First, make the chinchilla comfortable in the new environment.
Chinchillas, when adopted, are already under the stress of the changing atmosphere. Use bedding and litter material for chinchillas. The chinchillas can develop allergies to some litter materials, so make sure you use a litter and bedding safe for your pet.
Use waste transfer Method:
This method is easier to potty train a chinchilla, but it needs patience. You must observe the habits of your chinchilla to train them accordingly.
The chinchillas have a habit of peeing in one corner of the cage. However, they defecate in any other place in the corner. To start the potty training of a chinchilla, you can place a litter box in the corner where chinchillas pee in the cage.
If your chinchillas are not peeing in a corner, they might not be ready for potty training. However, give them some time to adjust. Avoid cleaning the cage of your chinchillas for a week to observe where they urinate.
Similarly, this method is also useful for chinchillas living in a free-range environment. These pets can pee or defecate in any corner of your house.
To train these chinchillas, monitor these animals. Observe where your pet is going to defecate. Use tissue or wipes to pick up the waste and place it in the litter box.
The animals have strong olfactory senses, and they get attracted to familiar smells. Your chinchilla will gradually start using the litter in a few weeks. Place the litter in a visible place to encourage the chinchillas to use it
Use the gradual association method:
In the gradual association method, use litter material or bedding to make chinchillas habitual. Once you identify the corner your chinchilla uses to pee or defecate, associate this corner with litter material or bedding. Use bedding material only in that corner and clean the rest of the cage.
Gradually the chinchilla will become habitual of using litter material or bedding to defecate and urinate.
After a few weeks, you can remove the bedding material and replace it with the litter pan or tray. Don’t remove or change the pan or bedding material for a few months. Give time to your chinchillas to develop these habits successfully.
