Chinchillas with thyme

The chinchillas’ feed comprises dry hay and pallets. They do not need wet food. The chinchillas can fulfill their water requirements by drinking water. So, the wet food requirement is only 10% of the chinchilla diet. Having food with excess water can upset the digestive process in chinchillas.

Chinchillas are omnivores, and they can eat many herbs and vegetables. But, can chinchillas eat thyme? Yes, you can feed a small amount of thyme to your chinchillas. However, feeding in large amounts can make your chinchillas sick instantly. Therefore, you must strictly avoid feeding large amounts of thyme to the chinchilla regularly.

Nutritional value of Thyme:

The thyme is a creeping herb. It grows usually on walls like creeper plants. You can grow it in your house, but the stems become woody and hard.

One benefit of eating herbs is that they lack cholesterol. Therefore, herbs are healthy. However, is it a good idea to feed thyme to chinchillas? Thyme contains the following nutrients:

Thyme contains many minerals. This calcium-rich herb can damage the health of the digestive tract of your chinchilla.

Should chinchillas eat thyme?

According to our researchers, feeding a few leaves of thyme once or twice a week does not harm your chinchilla. But why do you want to take this risk when there is no special nutrient that thyme can provide to your chinchillas?

Diarrhea and GIT problems:

The chinchillas usually love to eat vegetables and herbs. However, fresh herbs are rich in water. This water can make the consistency of feces lose and watery.

Sometimes any component of herbs can irritate the digestive tract of chinchillas. The calcium in Thyme is very high. This calcium can alter the water absorption in the digestive tract and cause diarrhea in chinchillas.

Insecticide toxicity:

However, if you still plan to feed Thyme to your chinchillas, make sure you wash them nicely. The herbs raised on farms have small concentrations of insecticides.

The chinchillas, because of their small body weight, are very prone to problems like carbamate toxicity. Therefore, avoid feeding high amounts of Thyme.

You can give one or two leaves of Thyme daily as treats to your chinchillas. However, avoid feeding in large amounts to prevent any digestive problems in chinchillas.

According to veterinary experience, chinchillas can eat a half cup of thyme leaves per week. Do not feed excessive thyme leaves, seeds, and stiff shafts of thyme plant to your chinchilla. Feed only one to two leaves per day if you want to give Thyme as a snack to your chinchilla.

  • Can chinchilla eat dried thyme?

Yes, chinchillas can eat dried thyme. However, the rule is the same. Always feed dried herbs in moderate amounts. The dried thyme leaves are more concentrated in calcium and other nutrients. This can prevent excess water intake in chinchillas, but it can still irritate the gastrointestinal tract of chinchillas because of high calcium values.


Can chinchillas eat thyme? Considering thyme is an herb, you might think there is no problem feeding thyme to chinchillas. But thyme is a woody herb rich in water and calcium. These contents can cause diarrhea in chinchillas.

Therefore, the researchers recommend using thyme in moderation for chinchillas. You can only use a half cup of thyme leaves to feed your chinchillas in a week.
